Advances in Civil War Weapons During the War: Hotchkiss Shells

I moved to Sharon, Connecticut in 2001 and since then have slowly been gaining more and more interest in its past. One of the first items of interest was Benjamin Hotchkiss' "Explosive Projectiles". As a result of his improvements, the Hotchkiss Company supplied more shells for the armies of the North during the Civil War than all makers combined.

IMPROVEMENT IN EXPLOSIVE PROJECTILES, Patent No. 35,153, dated May 6, 1862. B. B. HOTCHKISS:

Be it known that I, B. B. HOTCHKISS, of Sharon, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Imments in Explosive Projectiles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, and which is a longitudinal section of what is known as the “Hotchkiss rifle projectile,” with my improvement added. My improvement relates to the contents or filling of the projectile, and to the adhesion of the same to the inclosing part, and is applicable to all forms and constructions of explosive projectiles. IMPROVEMENT IN CONCUSSION-FUSE FOR EXPLOSIVE SHELLS, Patent No. 35,611, dated June 17, 1862.B. B. HOTCHKISS:

Be it known that I, B. B. HOTCHKISS, of Sharon, in the county of Litchfield, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and important Improvements in the Percussive Mechanism of Explosive Shells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, prepared with a view to the obtaining of Letters Patent therefor. My improvement is intended for use in connection with rifled ordnance, or with some other means of throwing the shell in such manner that the point which will strike the object first can be determined. Its purpose is to cause the shell to explode with certainty at the instant of striking any object, and to avoid all danger of explosion at other periods. View document
